English Language Requirements

91Ƶ welcomes applications from candidates whose first language is not English. To demonstrate proficiency in the English language, 91Ƶ recognises a number of formal tests.

Please see below for details of the scores required from the most widely available English language tests (if the test you have taken, or will soon be taking, is not listed, you should contact us to check we recognise this particular test and for details of the scores required for admission). 91Ƶ English Test

91Ƶ has partnered with to deliver computer-based English Language Tests. Password English language tests are designed and academically managed by CRELLA (the Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment).

The tests are formally aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the international standard for describing language ability.

Accepted Alternative Qualifications and Tests

We also recognise the following qualifications/tests:

  • IGCSE English Language / First Language English / English as a Second Language
  • Cambridge International O Level English Language

We are aware that from time to time there may be difficulties in undertaking in-person tests at recognised test centres, due to closures, reduced testing availability, location, etc. and where this is the case we may be able to accept one of the following alternative tests:

  •  tests taken from 1 July onwards

There may be exceptions if you have previously completed a recognised academic qualification taught and assessed in English.

Accepted Grades

Home Students Undergraduate:

  • Password / IELTS: 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all components)
  • Duolingo: 100 (with a minimum of 90 in all components)
  • ETS TOEFL iBT with 80 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
  • Pearson PTE: 60 (with a minimum of 59 in all components)

Home Students Postgraduate:

  • Password / IELTS: 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all components)
  • Duolingo: 110 (with a minimum of 90 in all components)
  • ETS TOEFL iBT with 88 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
  • Pearson PTE: 61 (with a minimum of 59 in all components)

Accepted Grades for International Applicants

International Students Postgraduate 

If English is not your first language you'll need to be able to show you have the required level of English language. This is so we can ensure you'll be able to follow your course.

For postgraduate courses, our standard entry criteria for postgraduate courses is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with nothing lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Some of our courses may have higher English language proficiency requirements; for details and exceptions regarding IELTS, please visit your course page of choice.

Please note that any student requiring a SELT for pre-sessional or study below degree level must ensure that they take their IELTS at an .

We also accept the following English language tests as equivalent to IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each element:

  • ETS TOEFL iBT with 88 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking
  • Pearson PTE with 61 overall and a minimum of 59 in all components.
  • Oxford ELLT with 7 overall and a minimum of 5 in each component
  • Duolingo with 120 overall and a minimum of 100 in each component.

Reifeprufung with a grade of 2 (Gut) or above in both written and oral English exams.

Diplome van Secundair OR Certificat d'Enseignement Secondaire Superieur with a grade of 8.0 or 80% in English.

Studentereksamen with a grade of 10 or above in English.

European Baccalaureate with English as a compulsory subject or full option with a grade of 7.5 or above OR International Baccalaureate with Standard Level English grade 5 or above, OR Higher Level English grade 4 or above.

Ylioppilastutkinto / Studentexamen with an English grade of 6/E or above.

Diplôme du Baccalauréat Général with a grade of 13 or above in English OR Option Internationale du Baccalauréat with a grade of 11 or above in English.

Abitur with a grade of 10 or above in English or 2/6 in English Language as a Leistungkurs.

Erettsegi / Matura (Advanced) with grade 5 or above in English.

Irish Leaving Certificate with grade C or above in English.

Atestats par visparejo videjo izgliti with grade 8 or above in English.

Brandos Atestatas with 75% or above in the National State English exam. Please note we are only able to accept the National State Exam (Valstybinis).

Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires with a grade of 46 (mention bien) or above in English.

Maltese Matriculation Certificate with grade C or above in English.

Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs with grade 7 or above in English.

Vitnemål with grade 4 or above in English.

Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci or Matura with a grade of 70% or above (Advanced Level) in English.

Portguese English language high school examination with a grade of 14 or above, taken as part of the Certificado de fim de Estudos Secundários (Certificate of Completion of Secondary Studies).

Diploma de Bacalaureat (Baccalaureate Diploma) with grade CEFR B2 or above in all English components.

Fullständigt Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskolan - English C unit with VG or above.
